The era of good feelings led to a period of mass democracy. Political Candidates were now forced to truly appeal to their voters through baby kissing, free drinks, parades and such. Additionally political parties became well established.

CHAPTER 13 part one; Andrew Jackson =)
~Andrew Jackson said the same thing as Jefferson about if the government doesn't fulfill the citizens needs, they have every right to complain about it. The only difference though between the two is that Jackson was only guy who was speaking to the common people, not just the upper class.
He was the first common man president.
~By 1828 a new political party was formed, the Democrats
~78% of people voted back in that era....today it's less than 50%
~Adams won the election of 1824 because Jackson didn't have more than half of the electoral votes. The House of Reps decided Adams should be president instead. Clay and Adams had a little alliance going to get Adams elected and Clay into Secretary of State.

Chapter 12 b.
-Begin work on chapter 13!
-Andrew Jackson's Presidency
-Due next Tuesday
End of the first Political Party System - Federalists and Anti-Federalists
Federalists- Right, Conservative, President Washington, President Adams. Anti-Federalists (democratic-republicans)- Left, Liberal, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, J.Q. Adams
The Hartford Convention: Federalists ran out of support and collapsed as the importance of New England declined.
"The Era of Good Feelings" - A time of only one political party, Republicans. (Misnomer)
Why it was NOT an "Era of Good Feelings"
Panic- Same as a "Recession" or "Depression" today.
Slaves- As the country expands, the balance between slave and free states (North and South) begins to tip in the North's favor. The Missouri --Compromise was created to try to balance both sides.
--Terms: Maine is free, Missouri is Slave, and a line was set up that determined where states would be slave or free. 1820
American System- Henry Clay decided to use the Tariff and Bank, and used the revenues to build roads and improve infrastructure.
--South- Did not support
--North- Did support
--Improved industry in the North, the South remained agricultural. South was beginning to feel dominated by the north.
Monroe Doctrine
The first time the US was listened to by European monarchs.
They were told to stay out of the western hemisphere, leaving North and Latin America alone, and they agreed.
John Marshall in the Supreme Court
Helped in making the central government stronger and taking rights away from the states.
Chapter Twelve NOTES!!
-First political party goes down (Federalists) quickly.
-there were only two federalist presidents, George Washington and John Adams.
-The Hartford Convention was where they wanted to secede.
-The Era of Good Feeling: there was only one political party, the republicans (until Andrew Jackson comes in and splits the Republicans up later on)
-The Era of good feelings is a misnomer because it’s a “bad name”.
-After that there came a panic
-Slaves were an issue
-in 1820 was the Missouri Compromise which stated that everything above Missouri are free states and everything below are slave states
-The American System was another issue. It was introduced by Henry Clay to use the tariff and the bank to build infrastructure in the country
-The Monroe Doctrine said no more European colonization in America anymore
